We're without a bathroom sink tonight. The drain trap crumbled this afternoon. I bought a replacement. Normally a trip to the hardware store cheers me up, but the top quarter of the old pipe is still on there good and tight. I sprayed it with penetrating oil but now I'm too tired to tackle the job, so it'll have to wait until morning. This old house has been falling apart piece by piece for the last few years but over the last couple of months the deterioration seems to have accelerated. Like house, like owner. I don't know if the house is a metaphor for me, or I'm a metaphor for it. I also don't know if the right word is synecdoche or metonymy so I'm going to worry about that instead of the sink.
I wouldn't read too much meaning into that trap falling apart. The thin metal ones seem to fail on schedule every 7-8 years.
