Friday night. Ten-fifteen. Watched "Onward" tonight for family movie night. Enjoyed it. Lots of fun and laughs. So why am I now sitting out on the porch in the dark, brooding?
Probably that "Impermanence of Life" theme Pixar has made a cornerstone of its brand.
Think about it. Aren't most Pixar movies loss, longing, and death?
“Finding Nemo”. "Finding Dory". “WALL-E”. “Inside Out”. All the Toy Story movies, especially “Toy Story 3”. “Coco”. ¡Dios mio! “Coco”.
Of course not all of them are as straight-forward and insistent about it as "Up".
Pixar’s next movie is “Soul”. The main character is dead, at least temporarily. And an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” was in the works, and may still be.
"Onward" is in the same vein, even more so.
And all the "Lord of the Rings" references don't help.
And, jeez, it's right there in the opening line:
"Long ago, the world was full of wonder."
Long ago...
Sigh
At least there are fire works here.
On a quest you have to use what you have.
