My parents built their house in the late 1960's. My father died in 2000, and my mother in 2013. When I went over to their house to clean up inside and out before we sold it, I sometimes stopped to see if I could feel their presence. I couldn't. It was just a house. I occasionally drive by there; I have to make a special trip from the other side of town, and we almost never have any business there. I look, and still there is nothing. I am not sure where I will find their ghosts.

My brother died two years ago. He had lived in a lot of places, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, New Kensington, San Diego, and eventually Chattanooga. There is no house I associate with him. But before he died he said he wanted his ashes spread in the New River Gorge in West Virginia, because, as one of the oldest rivers in North American, it was closest to the creation. His wife has not wanted to go up there -- it's about a seven hour drive. But last fall I collected some ashes from our stove and drove up to the New River Gorge Bridge. I spread those ashes in the river. I checked my feelings, and there seemed to be no trace of my brother, but now, for some reason, I feel an urge to go back there again.
