Interestingly, the New York Times front page article on the Hiroshima bomb gave credit to Lise Meitner. The idea of an atomic bomb had been around for decades by then, ever since Einstein wrote E=mc^2. I have an old book on one of Bohr's interim pre-quantum theories of the atom - not called that - and in the margins, there is a note that an atomic bomb is not possible, but a partial atomic bomb is. A complete atomic bomb would convert all of the mass into energy. A partial atomic bomb only converts a small fraction, but it does a pretty good job of destroying stuff.

It probably helps to remember that the first hominid to use a rock to kill prey or a rival had, like most of his or her peers, used rocks to smash things in play as a child. There's an old quote about the frogs dying in earnest.
