Why would people wear suits while doing lab work?

Edison had some truly odd notions (and obsessions). This 1917-Dambusters-bomb thing actually seems to have been one of his more bizarre, tho the one that truly fascinates me is his thing about direct current (DC) power. He luuuuurved DC power, and I can see how the engineering simplicity and utility (and safety) would have appealed to the guy.

The relatively insoluble problem is distance - DC is next to impossible to transmit beyond a short distance - and he just hated to accept that. He was a major player in the 19th Century "War of the Currents", and supposedly his company did some ratfking with some joker named Harold Brown to try and tilt the public towards DC.
