I have a bit of a beef with The Incredibles. It's a quality Pixar product and I have enjoyed it. What I don't like is the part where Mr. Incredible does a whiny douchebag rant about how unfair it is that Dash can't win all the athletic contests in his school. This rant is also a favorite of Randian douchebag self declared ubermenchen. Yes, Dash can probably win every athletic contest against non powered children at his school. Or probably anywhere. Probably even those that are not primarily contests of speed, if he really understands his power. Should Dash learn to enjoy such victories? Would he really prove anything in these contests, if they ought to be called that? Should Mr. Incredible be proud of, if he so chose, winning every boxing, wrestling, and MMA title in the world. Should the world's greatest chess master revel in defeating an opponent who has an IQ of 75? Or, for that matter, defeating Mr. Incredible at chess? I am reminded of Dune, where Paul kills a man in a duel for the first time. The Fremen Jaimis was no easy mark, but no match for Paul's training. His mother, watching Paul evaluate the ease of his victory, shocks him out of the moment with the words "How does it feel to be a killer?" He sees he has done no heroic thing in beating a man who couldn't win.
The other thing about the Incredibles is that the airplane shoot down is the exact scene from X2: X Men United. Hero uncertain of her powers uses telekenesis to deflect two inbound missiles. She succeeds once, and the plane is shot down. They were released about a year apart and I forget which was first.
