When I realized that Trump was serious about running, I realized that he would definitely be the Republican nominee. He was just slightly more obvious than the typical Republican who, when pressed, will mutter hypocritical pieties. I never took that "anyone but Trump" stuff seriously. Trump was their obvious candidate, and it wasn't about the evangelicals.

Republicans are what George Orwell used to call "bully worshipers", they like a big blowhard who kicks people who can't stand up to him. The cruelty appeals to them. The empty bragging appeals to them. A little flattery from a goon goes a long way with this crowd. They never think that those jackboot can be turned on them or that maybe the braggart isn't their friend but their exploiter.

So, you had a perfect candidate for the Republican establishment. Someone Anne Coulter could love. You had a good rabble rouser able to attract the weak who appreciate good solid thuggery and long to participate, at least as the thugs. Meanwhile, Hilary Clinton was running a terrible campaign. We couldn't even get a lawn sign. God damned, we could get one for our school board candidate, and that was a much less important election in the big scheme of things.

The right wing evangelicals are in there, but they'd vote for any Republican, but you can't win an election with just evangelicals. The important thing was that Trump epitomized the Republican mindset, the nastiness, the hypocrisy, the boasting, the certainty, the basic evil.

The Republican politicians will only disown Trump when he personally threatens their reelection, and even then, they'll do it reluctantly. They may pretend to be repelled, but it is rather obvious from their actions that they just love Trump. He's their id, out there, in front and living large.
