I am thinking that he was good at shoving plaster into the cracks of an almost fatally flawed system. Would he have been amenable to remodeling the edifice if he hadn't been a slaveholder himself?


Not that long ago, Merrill Petersen wrote what appears to be the same book, The Great Triumvirate. I haven't seen reviews of Brands' book, so I wonder what, if anything, it adds. (I did enjoy Brands' bio of FDR.)
