I worked at The Augusta (Ga) Chronicle in the 1970's. The racism there was blatant. It was so obvious that even the ordinary, run-of-the-mill racists in the newsroom joked about the level of racism in the editorial department. One of the editorial writers became Strom Thurmond's press secretary.
