Bob Muir

Read Herzog many years ago and was very impressed - do want to read it again to see if I remain impressed. I'm finding that happening as I've gotten older - things I thought were amazing when I was in my 20's don't seem as amazing now- it's not always a comfortable discovery.

Bob Muir -- It's true that the things we thought were amazing in our 20s are no longer amazing in our 40s and 50s. A writer like Bellow, however, can introduce us to things to be amazed by in our 40s and 50s that we didn't even know were "things" when we were in our 20s.

Coincidentally, the Penguin Classics edition of Herzog contains an introduction by Philip Roth entitled, "Rereading Saul Bellow." Reread without fear. I suspect you'll enjoy it.

Also, if you're interested in a companion for your rereading, I think Ellen Pifer's "Saul Bellow Against The Grain" is a good one.
