When I was attending City College in 1980 and '81, the local papers, including the left-ish Voice, treated Trump like a joke, for exactly the same reasons you've described here. Those journalists could have ended his career way back then, but they shirked their responsibilities, and I'll always hold a grudge against them for that.

I think that a lot of Trump reporting made it clear what a goddamn liar, idiot, and blowhard he was, even as the stories refused to say outright "Trump lies about..." If you had two brain cells you KNEW they were lies.

Rather, I'd argue that the people who voted for him knew perfectly well he was a lying moronic bully. That's what they LIKED about him; because he'd tell the lies they liked, would be stupid in ways they were stupid, and would bully the people they wished they could bully.

Should the newsies have hit the sonifabitch harder? Yes. Would that have made a serious difference? I'm not so sure.
