Another possibility is the simple calculus of power; if you are powerful enough long enough, and the people you have power over are "doing OK", they will be okay with you.

Trump is a fucking freakshow. But, for most straight, white, middle-class people he's a freakshow that is no more real to them than "Doomsday Preppers" or "The Curse of Oak Island". They're doing OK; the economy is rumbling along, we aren't in a shooting far, so good.

So the "Christ, what an asshole" factor tends to recede, and a lot of straight, white, middle-class people are going to be willing to give the fool room for his foolin'. Which has been Trump's deal ever since he was hustling real estate in NYC; he was a buffoon, but a fairly harmless buffoon (unless he owed you money) so he tended to get a pass from most of the rest of the world.
