New posts below but before scrolling down, please read...
Update: We've been knocked for a loop, but I still feel like a lucky blogger. Thanks to the generosity of readers, family, and friends we've paid the electric bill and shaved Ken's tuition costs down to $1800! Thank you so much! Individual thank you notes are on the way. We're not out of the woods by a long shot but at least the wolves aren't on our heels.
For those of you who haven't heard the details yet, here's where we are:
Thanks to those of you who've expressed concern for the situation here. I'm sorry I had to wait to give the details of what's happened. We've told our families now, so I can tell you. Mrs M lost her job.
As you can imagine, it knocked Mrs M flat and her morale is pretty low. It happened the week before Christmas. It was precipitous and it came without warning and without any cushion. Her severance was stingy and she didn't get a Christmas bonus, which we were counting on to pay Ken's tuition. I haven't been teaching. My plan was to take time off to try to recover further from my surgery. I can't walk or stand for more than a few minutes before my back gives out on me. The possibility I need another operation is real. So we're in dire straits. The good news is we still have health insurance until March.
If anyone has a line on a job for a talented, experienced, hard-working, hard-charging newswoman and editor, Mrs M would appreciate it if you'd let us know. Also if you know of a gig for a pretty good college English and writing teacher with a snappy prose style and a well-regarded arts and culture blog, I'm available.
I've got things in the works that will help us out financially t in the long run. Right now our two big problems are paying the heating bill and Ken's tuition. Ken goes part-time to a state school so his tuition for the semester is only about $2300. I'm looking into starting a go fund me for him. I don't know how that would work. But I'll let you know when it's ready.
In the meantime, if you can help us get the jump on things immediately, a donation would sure come in handy.
Thank you again for your kindness and support.
More news as it develops.
