Cathie from Canada

We've had medicare so long in Canada that I sometimes almost forget how very difficult it really was to get it. When Saskatchewan introduced the first medicare act in the early 1960s, the doctors in our province went on strike and it lasted for three weeks. A baby died because his parents couldn't find a doctor. Finally the strike collapsed. But the opposition to medicare still went on for several more years, with lots ot talk about how all our doctors were going to leave, and all the poors were "abusing" the system by going to the doctor too often, etc etc. Gradually medicare spread from province to province across the country, and politicians gradually realized that they wouldn't get reelected if they kept trying to dismantle it. The federal Liberal government finally passed the Canada Health Act to make the system relatively equal from one province to the next.
That said, I am appalled that the Republicans are still kicking and screaming so much about health care -- bastards, aren't they. And you are exactly right about why they want to dismantle it.

I hope to hell you're wrong about McConnell.

No assessment of Mitch is too evil.

This is a brilliant synopsis of the state of the Republican Party today. The only thing it does not address is how they have convinced our less fortunate white citizens to go along with their program. (Oh, I forgot about the everlasting stain on our democracy)
