The "overtly political" nature of the film is really summed up in the quote that you have embedded in your title: "I never met nobody ever got away with anything."

Whereas, in the political world, no one any longer remembers the last thing that anybody DIDN'T get away with; and no one can imagine anything ever having any [political] consequences again.

We have traded off accountability (and, along with it, and by definition, civilization itself) for some poor, thin, cheap, evanescent, subjective feeling of "freedom"; and this is a tradeoff that cannot even, at the lowest level, be respected as a manifestation of autonomy, because it is a tradeoff that is literally incalculable, because the consequences of unaccountability are infinite.

Just a very minor caveat.

The Mexicans never occupied west Texas. The Comanches were too fierce for them. Read T.R. Fehrenbach's The Comanches if you want documentation of this.

The Alberto Parker character represents the past of west Texas (as half Comanche) and the future (as half Mexican).

I agree this is the best movie I've seen in the 21st century.
