One could even wonder (perhaps Sorel does?) if the details of Falcon don't in other ways hint at the Astor duality. She's introduced as "Wonderly," after all, and Spade calls her a liar at almost every opportunity. Possibly her reputation is so seductive that that is what lures Archer to his death, and Spade to his infatuation. In them days even more than now the flickers liked to be ambiguous about what was "real" and what was celluloid, see, e.g., To Have and Have Not for further evidence.

Bill, good points. I'll have to rewatch The Maltese Falcon keeping them in mind. And I've got the book on reserve at the library, so I'll let you know what Sorel has to say about it. Unless you read it first. Then you can let us know.
