Sid Blumenthal -- yeah, that Sid Blumenthal -- has a new Lincoln bio coming out, and the first volume, A Self-Made Man: The Political Life of Abraham Lincoln, 1809-1849 on his youth and adulthood till his election to the House, is wonderful.

Davis, thanks for the heads up. I will alert those concerned here in Mannionville and remind them that Father's Day is coming up.

I think the irritation with Ernst was that she used her authentic background of hog-deballing as a metaphor for what she was going to do to the "gummint" if she got elected to it. It wasn't the rube/hick gimmick so much as it was the hypocrisy of her wanting to get elected so she could take the castrating pliers to what she'd been elected to do. T'was the GOP ever thus; talk big about being reg'lar folks while backhanding tax cuts to Snidley Whiplash as he closes the mill, ships the jobs overseas (all the while shoving baksheesh at Joni to "reduce the regulatory burden" of the hog innards getting slipped into the crick) and forecloses on the widder woman.

For all Lincoln's scythe-swinging he never used it was a campaign gimmick to talk about taking a scythe to the federal budget...
