Great take down, but there is one small concession I would not grant.

Now it’s true that the Confederates who carried that flag into battle were Democrats.

The secessionists who carried that flag into battle weren't Democrats. They left the Democratic Party, which still existed in the loyal states. The Confederacy had no political parties.

Regarding the KKK and Republicans in the 1920s: Robert McCormick's virulently Republican Chicago Tribune stated on August 27, 1921 that the old KKK had been created because of the "danger of Negro domination," and served an important end, while "contributing one of the romantic episodes of our history." Moreover, regarding the reborn Klan, "All the great fraternal orders, which accomplish so much quiet good .. make use of this natural liking for mysterious rites and secret ties, and the new Klan will hardly be denied the right to adopt the same policy." And also, the Trib reported, "The head of the order repudiates" accusations of murders and terrorism by the new Klan. [Quotations taken from George Seldes, Facts and Fascism, 1943].

I've heard you mention your Ft. Wayne times, but I never realized we were at Ball State at the same time. Go figure. Wonder if one of us ever passed the other the shaker of parmasaen cheese at one of the pizza places on the edge of campus?
