Oh, thanks for the link! I love Conrad and don't know that I've read this one. Bookmarked.

Tim, it's in the collection Within the Tides. Not one of his more well-known ones. All later stories. But, you know, still Conrad.

By a pleasant coincidence, earlier today I was looking at a page of the Los Angeles Conservancy's web site which was devoted to landmark buildings along Wilshire Boulevard, one of which was the Beverly Theater, a Moorish-style movie house in Beverly Hills built in 1925, and demolished in 2004. In a photo of the theater from 1927, the marquee announces a movie called "Road to Romance," starring Ramon Navarro, and written by, I kid you not, Joseph Conrad. That might be the oddest star/screenwriter combo ever, unless and until James Ellroy writes a rom-com for Meg Ryan. (By the way, who knew that marquee's ever listed the screenwriter? Not me.)

I find that it's not so much that I remember what a "fine fellow" I used to be--it's more that the fact that I was a card-carrying pain in the ass doesn't matter any more.
