I get into this more in my review, but if you haven’t seen any of the other movies in the series, I don’t see how you can appreciate or even get a lot of what’s in The Avengers, including and especially the importance of Agent Coulson and the terrific job Clark Gregg has been doing with the part and the great things he’s brought to the series.
Maybe this will help with that a little.
I saw the Avengers last night, after only having seen the first Iron Man movie. I'm not a comic book fan, but I do enjoy Joss Whedon. I loved Buffy and Firefly.
All I could think about watching the Avengers was, boy, that was one huge budget. It's not that I can't enjoy a movie full of explosions; I've seen all the Mission: Impossible movies. But I expected a little more from Joss Whedon than a bunch of explosions punctuated by one-liners.
And I saw Serenity before seeing Firefly, and enjoyed that, so I know Whedon's capable of making a movie for newbies.
