Phoenix Woman

Oh, yeah. All too common.

A buddy of mine, many years ago, was in the running to play the title role in Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac. My buddy was a fencer and had the lithe physique that accompanies such a pursuit, spoke French (and thus wouldn't mangle names), and even somewhat of a Gallic nose that needed very little in the way of putty to make it Cyrano's nose.

He lost the gig to a guy who weighed 350 pounds, had no acting talent or experience, couldn't fence, couldn't speak French -- and was the director's nephew.

As John Varley wrote in "The Golden Globe":
"So when little Drury showed up at the auditions and the word came down that she was to be treated 'just like any other singer,' that's exactly what I did. I treated her just like any other producer's favorite daughter, and gave her the part."
