Daniels can't win. No candidate shorter than 5'9" has won since the advent of television. Truman was 5'9" but had the advantage of being the incumbent. Carter was 5' 9 1/2", but had the advantage of running against the guy (Ford 6') who pardoned Nixon (5'11"). Americans like Presidents 6 foot or taller, and this has never been truer than the 20th Century.

Christie is in an interesting dilemma. Fat people do not win Presidencies...usually don't win governorships either. He won't run in 2012, for the reason you cite. The election is pretty much Obama's and even if Obama weakens, Christie is a horrible campaigner. He makes John McCain look statesman-like under pressure. He'll take the four years (he's young enough he could wait the full twelve, if need be, four more Obama plus eight more of whomever), lose weight, try Prozac and settle in for a 2016 run.

I think it will be Huckabee, to be honest. While Mitt is making noises for next year, he's sixty three, so already he's past the sell-by date for twentieth- & first- century Presidents (absenting Reagan, no one older than 56 has won a first term, non-VP-incumbent election since Ike). Huckabee is 55.

Yes. 55. I know, he looks much older.

Bill Murray

I don't think Daniels can beat Obama unless the economy recollapses. Mitch has a large number (or at least mass) of skeletons in his closet and Obama and his campaign people are master's at making these skeletons count.
