Mad as hatters

There are days when our political class, Democrats as well as Republicans, seems as out of touch with the way most Americans live and what we care about as Marie Antoinette was with the Paris poor.

There are days when it seems they’re not out of touch, they just don’t care.

There are days when they seem overtly hostile, when if they don’t actually hate and despise us, they are sneeringly contemptuous.

But more and more lately it’s seeming that what they really are is out of their fucking minds!

And I’m not just talking about the fools and lunatics in Washington.

Here in New York State we ought to be able to count ourselves lucky we didn’t elect a governor as vile and dangerous a corporate hatchet man as Wiconsin’s Scott Walker or an out and out thief like Rick Scott of Florida or a bully and blowhard like Chris Christie down in New Jersey and John Kasich over in Ohio or a moron like the governor up in Maine, the art critic, Paul LaPage.  We have a brand new governor who no doubt considers himself a good liberal and Democrat, the son of Mario Cuomo no less, and what’s he up to?

Andrew Cuomo can’t pat himself hard enough on the back for writing a budget that, depending on how you look it, is either a gigantic tax hike on the middle class or a huge pay cut.

One way or another, it amounts to sucking gobs and gobs of cash out of our wallets by making us pay more for services that we used to take for granted because we already paid high taxes to cover them.

Whatever we’re not going to be paying more for, we’re not going to get anymore. 

Cuomo’s proud of this.

What’s more, he and a whole bunch of members of the Albany political class, state senators, assemblymen and women, and their staffers, can’t get over themselves because they’re apparently managing to bring this budget in on time.

New York is notorious for not having been able to do this.  This will be the first budget to come in on time in five years!  And that last one was the first to come in on time in years itself.

They not only expect us to be impressed by this.  They expect us to cheer for them like heroes for it.

This wonderful on-time budget, by the way, includes what is essentially tax cuts for millionaires.

Did I mention that Cuomo thinks he’s a liberal like his father?

Out of their fucking minds.

There's a lot to be upset at. But it's bad enough that once again politicians are lecturing us on the need for "shared sacrifice" while they cut taxes for millionaires, and bad enough that this budget's going to do some serious damage to people's lives way beyond a little more "shared sacrifice." What's infuriating is that Cuomo et al really seem to think they've done us all a great favor and that we should be grateful and love them for it.

I think Andrew did see that speech. He was there, I believe. But he should watch it again. All Democrats should.
