There are refunds with the Kindle. When you buy a book on your Kindle, the page it takes you to includes an option to undo the purchase (if you bought it by mistake), and if you decide you don't want it even after that, you can contact customer service within seven days and return it.

The way I avoid bankruptcy with a Kindle is with samples. When I find a book that sounds interesting, I download a sample, I don't buy it instantly. Then when I'm looking for something to read, I go to my samples collection and pick out something and start reading it. If it's still interesting, I buy it then.

No more boxes of books I can't remember why I bought. No more buying duplicates of books that sound interesting, and sounded interesting the last time I encountered them, too, but I still haven't read.

There are refunds with the Nook too. Works just the same as with any online purchase you make.

Sherri, Dylan. Thanks for the info. I couldn't find anything directly about returning kindle editions on the Amazon webpage. But it does say there are no refunds on "downloadable software," which I assumed covered ebooks.

This is from B&N's returns policy page:

We are unable to accept returns for eBooks, magazines, downloadable PDFs for SparkNotes and Quamut products, gift cards, and shrink-wrapped items that have been opened. Please note: Once purchased, eBooks cannot be refunded.

That must refer to ebooks in other formats.

BUT! The reason as restated now applies in even more force: I don't have the strength of character to avoid bankruptcy.
