Updated.
Apparently there are plenty of Republicans in Congress who aren’t worried about facing campaign ads with the variation on the theme, The GOP Wants You to Pay for the Mess BP Made.
Good luck to them on that. But the line many Republicans are taking is that we should go easy on BP because the Deepwater Horizon blow-out was an “accident.”
Without going there…
It might be an accident if you run a stop sign, but you’re still liable and you’re still going to get ticketed.
They’re adopting an adolescent’s conception of an accident. If you didn’t mean it to happen, then it doesn’t matter how stupid, careless, selfish, disobedient, or irresponsible you were, you should be let of the hook with at worst a stern lecture and a promise that you won’t let it happen again.
But as Chris Hayes and digby note, corporations can do no wrong in some people’s eyes, while the rest of us can’t be punished enough for our mistakes.
Corporations are the spoiled favorite children in the Republican conception of the national family. Everybody else is the scapegoated stepchild sent off to sleep in the fireplace or out in the barn, our job is to sweep the ashes and tend the hogs and we’d better not complain about it.
More from FDL’s Josh Nelson.
Hat-tip to Greg Sargent.
Update: Republican Congressman Joe Barton made a campaign ad for the Democrats this morning.
Other Republicans were not amused.
