By the riverfront. Newburgh, New York. This morning around 11. Sunday, April 25, 2010.
How do you feel about paintings that look back at you?
Details from a five panel mural downtown.
First panel. Washington’s Headquarters.
Artist Garin Baker completed in the mural in 2007. He used residents of the city for his models. That’s the mayor in the group with the Revolutionary War soldier and the kids.
Second panel. Broadway.
Third Panel. Downing Park. I’m guessing the trees are residents too. I wonder if the couple in the left hand corner were a couple, if they became a couple, if they’re still a couple.
Unfortunately, the surfaces weren’t prepared in the best way available. Moisture gets in behind the paint. By the spring of 2008, the paint had begun to peel, particularly on one of the panels.
Fourth Panel. Dutch Reformed Church Gala.
Restoration work was supposed to have begun then. But by last summer, it hadn’t been done and the artist was talking about scrubbing away the fourth and fifth panels and leaving them blank for another artist or artists to fill with new work.
As you can see. That hasn’t happened.
Fifth panel. It’s The Crawford House. I had to look it up. The name’s peeled away.
