If you're a Nero Wolfe fan, there's a similar outfit called The Wolfe Pack.

Well, the canonical Holmes doesn't use the Calabash pipe (that's from William Gillette), and the fore-and-aft cap is more an invention of Sidney Paget than anyone, so Dr. Gideon Hill is an unreliable witness.

So who's behind IS the Giant Rat of Sumatra?

Those guys are devious. Way back in the mid-70s, long before the Internet, I donated a small sum to some charity and, wishing to remain anonymous, made it on behalf of "The Diogenes Club." Less than two weeks later I got a call from some guy belonging to the BSI who wanted to find out if there really WAS a Diogenes Club. He wouldn't say how he got my number, but it clearly involved some elementary detective work.

Lance, I would recommend that your young friend check out the Holmes series that Britain's Granada TV produced in the '80s (originally aired in this country as part of PBS's Mystery! series) with Jeremy Brett in the lead. Brett's characterization is THE definitive one, and runs circles around even Rathbone's.
