I'd also note that its probably a lot easier to keep everyone in your party on the same page if your party has a lot less people in it.

The party that controls about 58-59% of both Houses plus the Presidency is going to have more diversity of viewpoints than the party that has steadily lost ground in the last two national elections.

You'll never get Democrats to stick together like Republicans do because Dems think for themselves! Republicans are like robot zombies, all repeating the same worn-out talking points day after day. If one does come up with a new bumper sticker slogan, they're all repeating it in less than 12 hours. Here in Missouri it's been comical watching Kit Bond and Sam Graves tell us all about the stimulus bill projects that will benefit Missouri. Never once has anyone asked the question "So why didn't you vote for it?"
