I recently watched a documentary on Crawford which pretty much summed up the woman: not a nice mother, but someone who bit and clawed and scratched to achieve everything she did. And you gotta salute any individual whose last words were a snarled "Damn it, don't you dare ask God to help me."

I left a comment at the Siren's blog to the effect that after reading the Vanity Fair excerpt of a new book about Joan, I felt more sympathetic towards her daughter Christina.

Everyone interviewed in the article, from Bette Davis to Joan herself, seemed to feel that Christina just wasn't grateful enough. Joan rescued her from a life of orphanages and foster homes and gave her a beautiful home. And yet Christina had the nerve to expect to be treated as though she were Joan's natural daughter, as though she didn't have to work harder to get Joan to love her. The little ingrate.

I think that would have driven me to writing a bitter tell-all too.
