If Bérubé would only add his po-mo ironist viewpoint to this, we could nail it to the front door of the WaPo and the NYT.

well Lance, if it werent for the good things the Clintons have done over the years that have lived up to their claim of caring about people then I might be charmed by the jaded nature of your post. Sort of a late night Bogie over a whisky. But knowing what I know to be true I find it leaves me rather cold instead. But do send it to the papers - they would love it.

Judith, it sounds as though you're attributing to me the cynicism about the Clintons that I'm attributing to the hardbitten newsfolk.

This comment is seriously off topic so take a pass unless you are Lance.

I haven't happened by in a long time but imagine my surprise to see an Amazon box on your blog. The reason I haven't been around or blogging at all is that I opened an independent bookstore.

I hate Amazon. That sucking sound you's Amazon sucking any remaining juices out of local economies.

If you must promote the evil and vile Amazon, could you at least put something near it that directs folks to Book Sense?

The best ever, Lance. You are the best. I stay sane by coming here regularly.

BTW, I'm practically a Berube groupie, but this post is as complete, wise, and witty as it needs to be, just as it is.

I do agree about posting this everywhere we can find spare space. Lance has explained exactly what the problem is going to be for either Democratic candidate, and it is going to be a considerable one. So true about the enduring cynicism of the SCLM, which they try and cover by extolling right-wing patriot propaganda, precisely because it is propaganda, so much more reputable than that drivel liberal Democrats actually appear to believe. One of the reasons that Keith Olberman continues to receive only my half-hearted appreciation, the constant appearances on his show by people like Dana Milbank, who receive from Keith the respectful assumption that the constant snark has any meaning beyond its own cynicism, plus KO's constant silence about the enabling role of his compatriots at MSNBC in the rise of George Bush.

What makes my day today is Lance's honesty; who else anywhere is willing to tell us who McCain really is, at least as candidate and previously as a Senator: "...a puffed-up little bullyboy with a big mouth and a bad temper who has had the good fortune of seeing those character flaws turned into virtues by an adoring press corps." How long hve I been waiting for someone to have the guts to say that? Well, yes, Somerby is a real hero, too. And I'm in the middle of the Matt Welch book on McCain; worth reading.

For the umpteenth time - thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, Lance.

So where does The Messiah (Obama) fit?
