I think the expression is "you can't con..." because both the long and the short con depend on the avarice of the mark.

You'll have to take it up with Terry Pratchett. He's a Brit, though, remember. The expression might be different over there. Also he has a trick in his books of slightly altering old sayings, because, after all, it's Discworld, not Earth, things are a little bit different there.

I always thought the expression was You can't cheat an honest man, accodring to W.C. Fields anyway.

If you did fool an honest man, he tended to complain to the Watch, and these days they were harder to buy off.

I would tend to think this is the wisest reasoning for not cheating the honest. Because they are honest they often fail to spot the dishonest making an easy mark. But being honest they also have no fear of "the watch" and will not hesitate to set them upon those who cheat them.

And I ten to think that "the watch" is "honest" throughout most of this country simply because they are generaly being watched. Honesty of course being a relative term. They are certainly hard to bribe without offering huge money. And I would imagine, even with the really big money, you could be in for a rude surprise if you try to bribe certain members of "the watch."

Since the honest man is so honest, does he ever know he's being cheated?

Pratchett truly rocks! LOL!

Can't wait to read the whole series again.
