Most excellent post, Lance.
While watching the Kosmopolitans throw beef stew at each other over Hackett's withdrawal, and seeing some of them learn for the (apparently) 1st time that political considerations may trump Sainthood, you've managed to express the matter even-handedly while still seeing a bright side!
Thank you.

I agree with Greg -- this post is indeed, most excellent.

On Hackett -- Not tactful and a loose cannon. You're right. There is something about him when he lets loose that rubs me the wrong way. He was on Bill Maher's show last year and when that part of him came through, it was a cringe-worthy moment for me. And why? Why do I want him to be reasoned and calm and come across perfectly? Why does the right get to be nuts, not care and win?

Oh, I don't know. I've got a point in there somewhere trying to break out. Maybe I need a little chocolate...I'll be back.

I may be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that he wouldn't run for the House "while there are other Democrats contending for the seat." If that's the case, new circs could apply.

Paul Hackett sounds like he's had enough of the bullshit. So have I. The ineptitude of Dem party leaders created this no-win situation. They called his donors and talked to them about withdrawing their support!!! He was to quietly accept this as "it comes with the territory?" He did the right thing by coming out strong against this "old politics" BS.

BTW - Republicans in Ohio are NOT going to vote for Brown and now there are probably a fair amount of dems who are going to opt out. This is idiocy.

If Paul Hackett really was as tough as he seems to fancy himself why didn't he stand up and fight? He could have just as easily told the party leaders thanks for the advice, but I'm going to press on. In Frank Capra's Mr. Hackett goes to Washington when told to sit down, shut up and support the bill, does Paul Hackett filibuster, no he throws his sandwich in his briefcase and stomps home.

I think his behavior has shown him to be a narcissist and a hot-head. We already have too damn many of them in politics. Good riddance.

What the Democrats should have done if they were smart (big if, I know), is make up for breaking their promise to Hackett by offering him something in return - something that was valuable enough to convince him that they were invested in him, and would continue to be so if he would settle for the House seat instead. What they should have done is given him the SOTU rebuttal.

This is the new face of the Democratic Party. Young, fighting, progressive, tough and smart.

Brown would have his Senate shot, Hackett would have felt well-supported and likely would have consented to run for the House, and we would have had a rebuttal that was worth watching.

Are you really saying you're a fan of plain speaking? Isn't that what we've been accusing Bush of using all these years?

How do you rate people like Barack Obama and John Edwards on plain speaking?

Michael Bains

A Democratic Governor of Ohio stands a better chance of being nominated for President than a Senator.

I think Hacket has the Ahnoldian charisma necessary to win that seat in Ohio and soon. It would be great seeing him go up against Ken Blackwell, in all his neo-con disingenuity, this Fall.

Frankly, that victory would help me feel alot more hopeful should my only efficacious option in '08 be Hillary. Though with this Admin's precedent set, perhaps Hil wouldn't mind runnin' as VP to Edwards' front man...

Love the site Lance.
