Mmm. . . overweight chicken.

These stories make me feel incredibly sad. For balance, I have panda cam on my blog. Starving chickens due to religious craziness...deep breath...shake it off...

And speaking of tough men (or should I say young men) Fred at Making Conservatives Cringe has a good post on the silencing of soldiers when they speak out about Iraq.

I imagine them being nursed back to health so they're good enuff fer eatin.'

Kinda like the death row inmate struck by illness who must be cured so he can be killed.

OK: Not the same thing but it's all so weird...

Actually, the people who "rescue" broiler chickens (or, around here, buy live lobsters & release them) are responding to the same human impulse as the people practicing the kapparot. They want to "atone" for their sins, and/or to stand in as atoners for the sins of the larger human community. Returning a lobster to Gloucester Bay, arguably to be re-trapped, is hardly more logical than waving a live chicken over your head to gain remission from sin, but the symbolism is more important to the people doing these things than the logic anyway. However, leaving those chickens to die in the warehouse was a crime (& probably a sin) and I hope the individuals responsible will be held to account. You can be a carnivore, or religious, or a religious carnivore, without being needlessly cruel.
