As an observer whose father was an upper-level officer in the Navy, I can tell you that once you get into the ranks of Admirals and Generals your abilities are presumed to be very good; it's often your political skill within the service that determines whether you get that first or second star. It's probably been so forever. Remember Billy Mitchell?

If Byrnes ticked off both the civilians and his superiors, his fate was preordained; the only question was what reason would be put forth publicly.

The Heretik

Absurdities sexual and violent run rampant in this tale. In the most amoral administration in history, a general has his career ended four months before retirement for screwing a woman when so many others things are are so um more screwed? Agreed. More to this than meets the eye.

If you google Byrnes and Iran, you will see several links noting that the real reason for his ouster was his opposition to the NeoCon plans to use the Air Force to attack Iran.

Lance

Agi T.,

You didn't link to your own excellent post on the Iranian solution, Guns of August.

Perfect, and scary, title for the post too.

Lance, I think you should move a little of the end to the front of this post. I know it cuts some of the edge, but...

Don't forget that Byrnes was in charge of Army recruitment.

This is definetly a vindictive and unprecedented action.

Not only is he publically humiliated, the loss of rank will cut his pension, harm his future job-seeking, etc.

Hey Lance, Believe me it was more then adultery that canned Byrnes...I have MANY married military officers hitting on me like hungry horney dogs! They are all over AOL!They only deserve to be charged when they LIE about their personal life and embellish war stories from their nice comfy desks while the real men fight and die with their blood for this so called war!
