I agree with you. But I will say that it's as good a lesson for the left as well as the right.

The bible is text made for the purpose of control. You only quote what you need, and there is something there for every occasion...

Lance

Denis, Well, that's how I use it, but citing Scripture for my own purposes is a trick I learned from the devil.

Erik, too true. Too true.

Rana

Amen.

"Whatever you do will be the right thing. And whatever anybody else does to oppose you will be doing the wrong thing. No doubt. No questions. No thought. No dilligence required."

I see this all the time from the right-wing pundits, and that's tolerable. What scares the hell out of me is that I now see it from the entire Bush Administration, from the top on down, and that's terrifying.

Claire

This isn't actually in reference to this post-- I just wanted to say I like the new layout! It's easier to see both your blogroll and the recent links!

Nice new look, son.

Hi Lance,

Just wanted to let you know I like the new "look" -- looks great! Looks very organized and neat --

9/11 provided the perfect opening for the ascension of faux moral absolutism. Everything comes back to "You're either with us or against us."

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Nobody said that Right Wing Christians were perfect. We are ALL behind the ball.

There are those among us, though, that are struggling to be better people, and there are a subgroup among the "strugglers" that are using Christianity as a blueprint plan to acomplish this "betterment." Maybe this isn't a perfect path, but it has a little more time-tested street cred than Scientology or Ayn Rand.

Speaking for myself, I have no issue with you pursuing whatever path to enlightenment you want. I DO take issue that you have nothing better to do than stand around mocking me for my many failures at attempting to achieve the unachievable.

I despise liars.
I am a liar.

I loathe hypocrites.
I am a hypocrite.

I aspire to live my life according to a codified series of principals and mores called Christianity.
Yet I am a relentless sinner.

Lance, your causal connect-the-dots between the tennants of the Bible you identify and the conclusions that you draw from the failures of some to achieve them... Well... You have logic leaps and specious sidesteps big enough to drive a truck through.

I'll spare you the point-by-point.

Liberals are NOT Anti-American. Liberals are just Anti-long-term-view.

Liberals are not Pro-terrorists. Liberals are just pro-anything that discredits the values put forth by George Bush (as a figurehead for conservative values.) So... yeah, dude. From the sidelines sometimes it does look a little suspect.

My mind knows better than to question the reasoning power of the opposition, but when I think about the long-term consequences of listening to the cut-and-run crowd, I do have that WTF moment of exasperation.

If your premise is that the values and opinions of “Right Wing Christians” are invalidated by the fact that so many of them (us) SUCK at being Christians… Wow. You can set up that straw man and knock him down all day.

The Bible was written by men. It conflicts with itself, even testament-to-testament, regardless of what Fundamentalists will say. Naturally, folks attempting to follow its teachings will conflict a bit with each other. (See also: Qur’an, Talmud, Book of Mormon, Tantras, Sutras, and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.)

From the sidelines sometimes it does look a little suspect. It sure looks like you are rooting for the failure of American policy in the Middle East to the end of electing a government representative of your values SO THAT you can propagate values THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MIDDLE EAST.

My mind knows better than to question the reasoning power of the opposition, but when I think about the long-term consequences of listening to the cut-and-run crowd, I do have that WTF moment of exasperation.

Crap. Sorry. Hung up on the first "Send." Thought it died and sent again.

Sorry. Add "dumbass" to the list of my many faults.

Lance

Juan, the double-posting is not your fault. It's Typepad being eccentric.

Good quote from Paul.

I think you missed my point, or I wasn't clear. I didn't say the message of the Bible is discredited because people, Right Wingers or Left Wingers, were failing to live up to them. I said that the messages aren't a clear cut, step by step path to salvation. They need to be interpreted and applied with care and often entirely disregarded---An eye for an eye, anyone?---which is to say that you can't be an absolutist about them and expect to lead a virtuous life. Furthermore, I don't believe that Right Wing Christians are absolutists. I think they interpret, apply them with care, and sometimes disregard them in order to be virtuous.

And I'm one Liberal who isn't rooting for Bush's policies to fail. I think they already have failed. Big difference.

Tell me how retreating further and further into Bagdad is good for Iraq and the United States in the long term, then maybe I'll understand why you think there's a light at the end of a tunnel that I think has already collapsed.

And then there's this question: What if Bush is as bad as we think he is? A lot of conservatives are coming around to that view. We've had bad Presidents. Some have been Democrats. What if this guy is one?

Samuel

Calvin is an absolutist too.
