Our homes are full of technology that we need but we can’t rely on and which cannot be fixed when it fails. We are more and more dependent on the corporations that make the devices and less and less dependent on the devices themselves, and certainly less and less dependent on our own abilities and skills.

Somewhat true...people can fix those little devices and although right now they are the corporations there is something that is slowly even permeating the scene and that is Open Source. Not just software but hardware too. Part of Mr. Roddenberry's future was that while machines handled a lot of tasks that we no longer do that would leave us with the task of learning and creating, not just for profit but the benefit of man. Which of course is what is lost on Mr. Bush, the Republicans, and the Democrats. Both sides continue to bicker and fight and not do really anything in the interest of making this nation stronger. They are both fighting for their own self interest and their piece of the pie and 50% of America supports them. Considering appx. 50% of the population only votes - so forget about Bush's 51% mandate. Only more than a quarter, barely, really believe in his "mandate".

When the parties stop fighting about morality issues maybe they can start focusing on the true unemployment - not the #'s showing unemployment checks issued, poverty in this country, and how globalization can benefit us and everyone in the world. And the single most important issue - Education for all - not through grade 12 but ongoing education for everyone. If we allow this country and ourselves to become illiterate than all will be loss.

Just my two cents...

The 2002 cancelled series (soon to be a movie), Firefly, is updated SciFi for the post-fascist take-over era. Here, the fighters for independence have lost their war. Now they exist on the outskirts of the Alliance Empire--renegades who take odd jobs on the frontier (damn the legalities), who no longer fight to overthrow the Empire, but just try to stay out of its way, to maintain a personal sense of freedom and a bit of humor.

As an astute friend of mine once said, Star Trek: TNG was a manager's wet dream. The interpersonal skills were more amazing than the technology. Perhaps that is Rodenberry's vision taken to its nth degree.
