thanks for the saul bellow post, lance.
i've been getting into bellow's novels
over the winter. actually, i just finished
henderson the rain king on monday. and yes,
i've been reading long passages aloud to
my girlfriend, who tells me it's a pleasure.
(now i wonder if she's merely humoring me!)

bellow's death has been a sharp loss, and
it was a real comfort to come home and read
your thoughtful words.

i'm about 40 pages into herzog; i think reading
more tonight will be the most healing thing
i can do.-dave

some of bellow's sentences are great one-liners.

he was one of the great jewish-american comedians of the 20th century, although he did his comedy on the printed page instead of stage, screen or tv.

i thought roth's assessment of him and faulkner was very generous. add raymond chandler to those two and you have, in my outlook, the three best u.s. novelists of the 20th century.

elmore leonard has got to fit on that
list. sometimes illustration is high art,
even though it is created as commercial
product. (damn this art-school crap i
still carry).

David, You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it. My wife says she actually remembers my reading to her fondly and that she read Henderson on her own and liked it.

Harry, Good choices. I'm on record prefering Ross MacDonald to Chandler, but Chandler sure was a master of the American idiom.

tell me, what are the best chandlers?
i had been confusing him with the so-so
