If money is speech, as our dominant politicians believe, then we may say all our little speeches have been effectively answered by big money…Wendell Berry, “Our Only World”.
Laura Ingraham is back from her “Easter break”. She’s still smarting from losing those advertisers. She’s still losing advertisers. IBM, Mitsubishi, Slimfast, Blue Apron, She’s still whining that David Hogg was a big meanie about it. She used her national platform to try to humiliate him and discredit him and with him the #NeverAgain movement he helps lead. She effectively called him stupid and lazy because he was turned down by four colleges he applied to. She implied he’s spoiled and entitled for applying to schools he had no chance of getting into. She tried to ruin life for a seventeen year old or at least make it as miserable for the moment as she could. I don’t know if it crossed her mind that among her fans are nuts with guns looking for an excuse to be heroes in their own minds by using them. But it should have occurred to her that she could have gotten Hogg killed. But either or didn’t or she didn’t care. She was reckless and vicious all to increase her TV ratings and advance a political agenda that puts the interests of paranoid hobbyists over the lives of...well, everybody. But he’s the bully.
For the record, Hogg’s GPA is reportedly 4.2 at the moment. His SAT score is 1270, and he was in fact accepted by one of the schools reported to have rejected him, UC Irvine, which is ranked at 42nd among the 311 best national universities (9th among the 132 top public schools in that list) US News’ 2018 ranking of the Best Colleges. Ingraham went to Dartmouth and got her law degree from the University of Virginia. She had one of the best educations money could buy. It didn’t take.
Hogg fought back and won this particular fight. Ingraham’s defeat isn’t yet total and probably won’t be permanent. Right now her bosses at Fox News are sticking with her…
"We cannot and will not allow voices to be censored by agenda-driven intimidation efforts," Jack Abernethy, co-president of Fox News, said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times.
Like Hogg’s a gangster attempting a shake-down…
But even if Fox eventually shows her the door, she’ll land on her feet. She still has her law degree. There are big bucks to be made on the Right Wing speakers’ circuit. She’ll get a book deal or two. In ten years she’ll probably still be a millionaire. Hogg will be struggling to pay off his student loans.
Unless he gets his own book deal.
Or someone buys the rights to his story.
Money flows every which way. It has no ideology.
But, see, that’s not how it’s supposed to work. It’s supposed to only go to the deserving, and in the eyes of conservatives, that’s them. It’s their birthright to be rich. It’s God’s will. There’s no greater sin than getting in the way of one of them or their own from making as much money as they want any way they want. That’s why liberal government is evil. Liberals pass laws and make rules and enforce regulations that get in the way of conservatives making money. And money to be made is as good as money in hand. If you prevent them from getting their hands on that money, even if you’ve done it by working harder and smarter and faster, you’ve as good as robbed them. Ingraham called Hogg a Stalinist. She would have been more honest about her feelings if she’d called him a thief.
It’s amusing to hear people who claim to believe money is protected speech rail against boycotts. (Never mind Right Wingers routinely organize boycotts of their own.) One of the ways money talks is by walking away. Very simply, you can speak with your money by not spending it. That’s supposed to be a fundamental premise of the free market. When you don’t have a lot of money, the most effective way to speak with it is to withhold it. That’s what boycotts are: a bunch of like-minded people withholding their money at the same time. What the money is telling Ingraham is that a great many people think she’s undeserving. And that’s another sin.
You are never supposed to tell Right Wingers they’re in the wrong!
How could they be?
They are good people. The only good people. The only ones who work hard and pay taxes. The only true patriots. They only ones who get married and stay married. The only ones earning and deserving God’s favor! And how do they know they have God’s favor? He rewards them with money.
Hogg didn’t just steal Ingraham’s money.
He thwarted God’s will.
He deprived her of her just reward.
