The trouble being, of course, that at this point there are two kinds of Republicans.

The plutocrats. They have a wonderful life, a wonderful life built on mulcting every nickel they can out of you and me and Joe and Molly and Uncle Sugar. How are you going to convince them that they're NOT having a wonderful life and the real "wonder" is a group hug with the parish poor?

Hint; you're not.

The bulk of the deplorables, though, aren't Filthy Rich. Instead the part of the Republican brand they cling to is exactly what Obama said it was: their God, their guns, and "their antipathy to people who aren't like them..."

And they have a whole industry packed with Rushes and Lauras and Annes and Joey-Joe-Joe-Scarboroughs telling them that only if they never, ever, EVER contemplate the sin of considering that giving the Richie Riches All The Money and keeping "those people" their place in their pristine Caucasian churches and schools, safe with their rifles and hamburgers and diesel trucks. And that questioning whether basing government on the theological principles of a bunch of Bronze Age desert nomads might not be the best possible way to run a 21st Century technological civilization...There is no "winning over" this sort of a person. They are political enfants perdus, social Forlorn Hopes, cannon fodder for the Culture War. To "win them over" a liberal would have to throw out everything that means being liberal - rational thinking, political egalitarianism, social openness - to cater to their tiny, meager souls.
