There’s some grim and mirthless satisfaction to be taken in all our Mr President Trump’s “winning.” He can’t seem to do anything right. Which is lucky for us. Imagine if he knew how to do his job and actually worked hard at it. But as sorry a spectacle as he’s making of himself in the eyes of most of the country and the world, he’s still dangerous and destructive, and there has been one thing he has been winning at, to the satisfaction of his yahoo base. He promised to make life even harder and more miserable for black and brown people, and at that he’s been very successful.
Until three undocumented immigrants were rounded up and processed by ICE agents in March, St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward on Sundays was a melting pot of faces.
Members of up to 12 Mexican immigrant families, about 50 people in total, could be seen in the pews and at the altar, where Mexican immigrant children served as altar boys and girls.
“No more,” the Rev. Tom Babiuch said solemnly in a recent interview. “They don’t come here anymore. They’re afraid to step out and have a normal life.”
Remember, Right Wing Evangelicals think he’s a good Christian.
Fort Edward is in Washington County, well upstate, along the border with Vermont. Trump carried the county. He carried 59 out of New York’s 63 counties. He must love looking at the election map of New York State in his coloring book before he goes to bed at night. The point is, unless there’s a large contingent driving over for Sunday mass from Bernie Sanders’ home state, it’s probable that most of the white members of Father Babiuch’s congregation voted for Trump. Which is to say they voted to have their fellow parishioners deported. That doesn’t mean that’s what they wanted. But they have no excuse for not knowing it would happen. And they were told by the Pope that good Catholics invite strangers in. Actually, he came as close as he dared to telling them good Catholics shouldn’t vote for Trump. But this is how he’s winning. Turning Americans against their neighbors.
