Loves me some FDR.

Sadly, what occurs to me looking at the speech is how old and sick he looks. FDR really wasn't a well man in 1944, and had it been any other year in any other time the Democratic Party would have done better to find a younger, healthier man to succeed him.

Probably wouldn't have been Truman, mind you.

One thing that I will possibly never understand is why the modern Democratic Party seems so unwilling to take up the mantle of the New Deal. The damn thing more-or-less created the midcentury United States, the America of lawns and weekends and vacations and "prosperity" - for other people outside the Golden Ones, that is. FDR, canny old patrician that he was, realized that with the siren calls of "equality" and "dignity" issuing from the totalitarian ideologies that the Rich would have to be chivvied out of some of their lucre to keep the smelly proles from doing a 1917 or a 1922 or a 1933. The modern Democratic Party seems to have forgotten all that until the Sanders campaign came along and revived some of the old "I welcome their hatred" spirit.

Ahhhh....THOSE were the days.
