But...a lot of his post-father success was (as Charlie Pierce likes to remind us) based on access to SSI survivor benefits. You'd think that an even mildly self-aware person who wasn't a totally selfish dick would have taken from that the dim notion that "we all need a little help every so often".

But Ryan didn't, and doesn't. Which makes him, IMO, no so much an aftereffect of having been "strong and tough" in a difficult time but having been an utterly clueless tool.

Which pretty much describes Ryan today.

What FDChief said. He banked his SSI benefits. I'm sure he'd rather have had a live father than that money; even I believe Ryan has that much heart. But that safety net apparently was for him only, special snowflake that he is. No one else should have access to a safety net.
