Saw this just as Father Jim was explaining on WNYC Radio. I'll never be a Christian but I gotta love those Jesuits sometimes.

So Merkins are now "Gomorrahns" ?

Fred Clarke has been killing it on this over at Slacktivist.

The Murkins (and I come from one of their parts of the world, even from some of their blood stock) always have been: they are essentially direct descendants of the post-Roman Germanic/Scandinavian migrants -- there's what's mine and there's the rest of the world not worth worrying about, ego comes first then tribe then getting your share of the loot, but tribe does matter in the day to day because everything else is Other worth either plundering, fearing, or ignoring, and only by being who you are as part of that roving, looting, honor-hidebound, bloody-handed, quietly rather nihilistic culture, are you truly human, and those who behave otherwise are weird and lesser. Letting them loose upon a whole new continent took away a lot of the Middle Ages and Early Modern periods' civilizing influences, you're pretty much back to sixth century Saxons and Danes with muskets, and now pickup trucks bigger than they need for any actual work they do with the Jim Crow Flag (the Confederates rarely ever used it, the Bonnie Blue was the CSA's battle flag) flying off the back. Those are the folks who identify ethnically as "American" (nothing hyphenated), who often were the poorest of the early waves of Anglophone migration to the emergent United States, and who headed out to inhabit the least citified parts of it that they could. Unless you were tribe/kin, the notions of hospitality and its holiness laid out in the Bible were alien to them. So, yes, they were cruisin' for rains of fire and pillars of salt. Because that was wrath deployed, oddly enough, in a fundamentally humanizing vision, that all people who crossed your door were to be treated with care, because the line between you and the stranger was solely a point of view, not a boundary of the world like it was in Northern European thug life. (Don't get me wrong, lots of wonderful things have come out of the British, Scandinavian, and Germanic cultures. But mostly from the people who stayed and citified themselves. The original rovers, they're a whole 'nother kettle of fish and a metric ****ton of them washed up on our shores.)

Matthew 25 is the guiding document of principle of my non-creedal (yeah, I know, I felt the altar-boy twinge in you the moment I said it, "what do you mean non-creedal?") and very-left wing Baptist church. First in the state of Oregon to become a member of the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (and first to allow gay marriages in the sanctuary, among other outreach) and we're not even in Portlandia :)
