FWIW, I was living in Illinois in 1984, and I remember being intrigued by Hart because he was a new face, but that's about it. If I voted in the Illinois primary, won by Mondale, I don't remember who I voted for.

It was during that year's primary season that I figured out I was a Democrat. (I turned 24 that spring; I had voted for John Anderson in 1980.) If I were voting in that primary today, I'd probably go for Jesse Jackson, a fact that would surprise the 1984 me a great deal.

Link,

Yes.

Hart was weird in that he didn't campaign as someone who wanted to be your friend or The Big Daddy Who Takes Care of Everything. he thought he was the candidate of ideas (I don't think they were good now but they were of the moment)- but that's never quite enough in America- we want to own our candidates in a way Hart resisted. So when he got in trouble- pffft
