I love this post. My only point of contention, if I may is this:

"Even the rare bishops who policed their own dioceses and punished the predators and protected their flocks were guilty of not doing more to stop what they knew was going on in other dioceses."

there is a limit to how much one can do before compromising whatever good one can achieve or even putting themselves in harms way.

Fine piece, Lance.

Thank you, B. Thank you, Icarus. Glad you liked the post. And Icarus makes a very good point. One of those rare bishops is mentioned in Spotlight. John D'Arcy. He was an auxiliary bishop in Boston and tried to get Cardinal Law to take action and got himself promoted for his trouble. Wound up the bishop in Fort Wayne, Indiana, arriving there at about the same time as Mrs M and I did. It appears he kept a good watch there. On the other hand, he kept quiet even after the stories broke and the only times he made the national news through his own initiative were when he tried to get Patrick Moynihan and then Barack Obama dis-invited from speaking at Notre Dame because they were pro-choice.
