Is this a reference to Crimea?

Russia had taken over Crimea in the 18th century. It was transferred from the Russian SSR to the Ukrainian SSR by Kruschev who was originally from the Ukraine. I was amazed that the most recent Russian takeover took this long. It has been a major Russian military port for centuries.

If you look at the Ukraine, it's really two states. There's the eastern portion that is essentially Russian and the western portion that is essentially European. The languages are different. The histories are different. During WWII, Russian forces were greeted with open arms by the eastern Ukrainians, but with resistance and suspicion by the western Ukrainians. I wouldn't be surprised to see a schism at some point, like the one in Czechoslovakia.

Of course, a lot depends on the Russian tolerance for being surrounded by failed states. An Eastern Ukrainian client might have its advantages, but I'd worry about setting up a new Chechnya.
