This is a totally unsupportable point I’ve made before, inspired this time not by seeing Alan Alda talk about SCIENCE at the Paley Center yesterday but by spending way too much time on Twitter this morning, but here I go again:
Seems a lot of people on the Left who probably routinely set their high school chemistry classrooms on fire trying to light their Bunsen Burners are in the process of turning SCIENCE into a religion.

I don't know if "in the process" is the right term. A literal devotion to science is at least as old as the European Scientific Revolution, and likely much, much older - its general popularity among various groups waxes and wanes, of course. I think what we're seeing is really more a reaction to New Age movements and post-modernism from both the Right and the Left, although the ends differ. In another 10 years we'll be enamored with post-post-modernism or the like and scientists can go back to working in relative obscurity.
