Ok, last night’s Academy Awards was kind of a sad affair. It was made sadder by Billy Crystal, apparently unwittingly, recreating his character from Mr Saturday Night. Crystal is turning 64 in March. When you’re one year away from becoming eligible for Medicare, it’s probably not a good idea to make jokes about other actors’ advanced ages, especially when at 82 (Christopher Plummer) and 84 (Max Von Sydow), respectively, they look better than you.
But the evening wasn’t wholly without fun. Times Herald-Record arts editor Tim Malcolm found five moments worth savoring.

Thoughts on who should host from a Variety associate editor and Dodger blogger.

I'm with you on Plummer, who was sadly deprived of a much-deserved Oscar for his work in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Movie (well, the movie he was in during that film, which is the one I would rather have seen), but von Sydow, sadly, appeared to be in Full Dottage, and I fear he will soon follow Davy Jones into that Locker.
Crystal looked more like the Crystal of Memories of Me, a shell of his former self. But either comparison works, and one has to suspect the producers knew what they were doing, and are just trying to make certain the Oscars hasten their path from being the Gay Super Bowl to as must-see as a Fox-produced halftime show that sounds like a garage band covering The Who or The Black-Eyed Peas.
