Lance , your review was longer than the movie!

Lance Mannion

food doc, yes, but only by 16 minutes, and you now have to factor in the deleted scenes.

I fairly well liked the movie, though I didn't think it great. Um, The Warriors Three have been in THOR, the comics, since 1965: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warriors_Three

But, sheesh, THOR in the comics has been revamped dozens of times since the Sixties. It's not as if he's only had no kind of personality or style since then; he's had, like all comic book heros of the past forty years, about as many as he's had writers and editors.

Don Blake ceased to be part of the Thor mythology decades ago. They threw him into the movie to stick to the original Marvel Thor, so oldsters would find the story more recognizable. (As opposed to, say, the storyline that lasted for years in which Asgard was moved to Earth, or the one in which Thor decided to rule Earth as the god he is, for a while. That didn't work out so well, as you might imagine.)

Then there's the storyline where Thor was a frog for a while.

Catch up in not too long form here, if you care: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor_(Marvel_Comics)#1980s

"The point of the Avengers as a team is that it brings together Marvel’s most arrogant, self-centered, and go-it-alone heroes---Iron Man, Ant-Man, Thor, and, sometimes, the Hulk"

Er, well, if you're talking about nearly 50 years ago. Er, if you want to talk about characters going through changes, just like at Hank Pym.

Or, instead, you could talk about the many dozens of Avengers of the last twenty years, or the recent Dark Avengers, but this sentence above applies to comics over 40 years ago, and not more recently. Jeez, the Hulk was an Avenger for, I forget, three or so issues, back when they were created, and that's it.

Fine review, Lance; please forgive me for getting stuck on the anachronistic bits. When do we get your review of CAPTAIN AMERICA? (Which I thought was pretty good, too.)

Lance Mannion

Gary, first, I'm old. Second, the movie appears to be about the original Avengers minus ant man and the wasp. What's happened in the last 20 or 30 years doesn't seem to have figured into the filmmakers' thinking, except for making Nick Fury black and apparently resistant to aging.

Gary Farber

Lance, I'm turning 53 in November. I'm just, you know, childish. I mean, child-like.

Yes, the Avengers in the movie will consist of Tony Stark/Iron Man, Cap, Hawkeye/Clint Barton (you didn't mention the scene with him in Thor, where he's name-checked as Barton, the guy with the bow who lunges for the high ground to keep his bow trained on Thor when Thor is knocking around S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Black Widow, Nick Fury puts them together, and apparently the Hulk will be brought in as a hero. Agent Coulson will be kicking around, but also Maria Hill will be brought in.

The primary villain will be Loki, per the original Avengers origin. I expect there will be nods to that story: possibly a fight against Hulk and then he joins them? Seems likely.

And, obviously, the Cosmic Cube is a key MacGuffin, along with the Frost Giants power thingie.

But what you've missed is where these films have been very much affected by modern story lines. The whole portrayal of Captain America is more the "Ultimate" line Cap then the mainstream one; that's why he's, um, wearing the Ultimate-version uniform, with the realistic helmet, and a gun, etc.

Ditto that Nick Fury as African-American came from THE ULTIMATES, etc. (And was never Sgt. Fury, although the rest of the Howling Commandos were in CAP the movie. Anyway, I didn't mean to pick on you about this, and apologies if I came across that way.

"It goes back to the very first incarnation of The Avengers, it goes to The Ultimates, it goes to everything about it. It makes no sense, it's ridiculous. There's a thunder god, there's a green "ID" giant rage monster, there's Captain America from the 40s, there's Tony Stark who definitely doesn't get along with anybody. Ultimately these people don't belong together and the whole movie is about finding yourself from community. And finding that you not only belong together but you need each other, very much. Obviously this will be expressed through punching but it will be the heart of the film."
Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers, about the film.

"...that's why he's, um, wearing the Ultimate-version uniform, with the realistic helmet, and a gun, etc."

I might mention that he'll go to a variant of the more traditional costume in THE AVENGERS, as duly appropriate to no longer being in a war.

Not enough Loki making mischief. Not enough Don Blake doing good deeds---serving one plate of pancakes shouldn’t be enough to earn your way back into Asgard. And not enough Kat Dennings.

I too had an issue with the "humility is a plate of pancakes and putting yourself in front of a robot to show off for your immortal friends" bit. That, and the fact I was 25 years too old to be cast for the film when they finally got around to making it, but I digress...

The whole premise of "Thor" centers around Dr Blake, a "mortal" who needs his cane to get around and treats all manner of patient.

THAT'S humility.

Good? Yes, but only in the sense that it gives Marvel an excuse to put Thor in The Avengers movie. It was nothing more than a glorified trailer for that film and it shows.
