I'd wager Rizzuto is in the Hall more for his post-career reputation that his actual career, but any Hall of Fame that doesn't include Gil Hodges is not worthy of the name.

Linkmeister

I'm with Dave: I'll take Rizzuto if you'll give me Hodges.

Banks actually played the last 9+ years of his career at first base, so I'm not entirely sure he gets full credit for being a shortstop. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bankser01.shtml

Versalles! I remember when they traded Maury to the Pirates and replaced him with that guy. He was Jose Offerman before Offerman was a tadpole.

Sherri

But that name! Zoilo Versalles! I remember having his baseball card.

Any Hall of Fame that includes Bowie Kuhn and excludes Marvin Miller isn't worthy of the name, as far as I'm concerned.

Jim7

As I remember it, Maury Wills fell out of favor with the O'Malleys because he chose to play his banjo in Las Vegas rather than go to Japan on a good-will tour. Back then what happened in Vegas stayed in Pittsburgh.

Go through those 1965 clippings and games and you'll see why Versailles deserved the MVP that year.

In the history of bad shortstop trades, though, no one beats the Mets.

I still don't believe Scooter belongs in the HoF as a player.
And I'm still boycotting Cooperstown (despite having a family member in it) until Pete gets in.

Linkmeister

Ken, "until Pete gets in." Which Pete might that be? Runnels? Did you mean Gil?

He didn't deserve it, to be sure. In his day, a HoF shortstop had a good average, great OBP, and excellent range. The single best determinant of a HoF shortstop's career in the 40s and 50s was runs scored, and Rizzuto fails epically on this count. Epically. He is among five players (IIRC) who don't have more than a thousand runs scored.

Rizzuto gets in on a shmoozefest. That's hardly in his favor. Even with Hodges in, he never deserved it.

Ken, I'm a Mets fan since 1962. Which shortstop trade are you talking about? They've made awful deals for pitchers, outfielders, and third basemen, but shortstops?
